This Blog Entry discusses commands that can be executed on a CISCO router to gather configuration and running status. In addition, logging should be turned up to capture all the log records via syslog.
The Splunk for Network application can be used as an example of how to collect network device configurations.
Here are the commands to configure a CISCO router to send logging messages to a Splunk syslog listener:

It would be great if when a router sends a syslog message that the configuration has been updated, Splunk would then execute a script to grab the latest device configuration.
