What is IRC?

Internet Relay Chat (IRC) has been around since 1988, and while its usage has been declining the past decade or so, it's still a place for users who share common interests to congregate.

How do I get on this crazy ride?

Depending on your level of expertise, there are several different ways. I'll start with the simplest, OS-agnostic ways and get into specifics farther down.

Beginner

Arguably the easiest way is going to be via the web interface at http://www.efnet.org - the only drawback is that it requires JavaScript, so there may be issues with Internet Explorer.
